The introduction of rehabilitation orthotics into chronic pain treatment plans has been a true blessing for many suffering with chronic pain. It has literally changed the way we handle certain conditions, and for the better.
Rehabilitation orthotics are particularly helpful in retraining an imbalanced bite. An improperly balanced bite distribution pattern indicates that there are neuromuscular problems that must be resolved in order to mitigate pain for the long-term.
Rehabilitation Orthotics Work in Conjunction With Other Treatments
Several things should be kept in mind when thinking about how rehab orthotics compare to traditional treatments.
First, know that rehab orthotics are not meant to replace or supplant other treatment protocols. In fact, rehab orthotics are designed to work hand-in-hand with other treatment modalities. They should be considered supplemental to other chronic pain treatments.
Next, know that there are several physical medicine modalities that make good sense to use in conjunction with rehab orthotics. Some of the most useful treatment modalities that work in tandem with rehabilitation orthotics include: Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation (CES), Ultrasound, Manual Massage (i.e., trigger point manipulation), and Cold Laser application.
Now, WHY we would want to use rehabilitation orthotics with the physical medicine modalities? It can be summed up nicely with an analogy…
Using rehabilitation orthotics and other treatments together is sort of like building a home with bricks — where the bricks represent the “treatment progress” made when you use treatment protocols like ultrasound, cold laser, electric, stim, massage, etc. Now, concrete is used in order to hold those bricks together — and that “mortar” represents the contribution made by the rehabilitation orthotic.
The rehabilitation orthotic is literally used to maintain your treatment progress so that it is not lost over time. Any benefit you receive from the treatment modalities WILL be lost if there’s nothing to retain your progress.
So, with chronic pain conditions like headaches, migraines, TMJ and face pain, or chronic muscle tension, the treatment protocols assigned by the doctor are meant to FIRST rehabilitate any neuromuscular problems present in the patient’s, head, neck, face, etc. However, in order to truly rehabilitate you to complete wellness, a neuromuscular rehabilitation orthotic can then be employed to ensure that the new state of wellness can be maintained for a very long time, or even permanently.
We use rehabilitation orthotics at Cranberry Headache &Migraine Relief Center because we know that doing so helps to keep our chronic pain patients free from headaches, migraines, and other pain. If you are in chronic headache or migraine pain, perhaps Dr. Robison’s treatments combined with a rehabilitation orthotic could get YOU where you need to be — living without pain or limitation.
